Botox® and its newer competitors, Dysport® and Xeomin®, are used to treat dynamic wrinkles or wrinkles of expression. It’s one of the first treatments aging men and women request because of it’s dramatic results (great bang for buck!), ease of use, and affordability. Many people start using Botox in their 20’s and 30’s for wrinkle prevention. In fact, every single employee at Cosmetic Skin and Laser Center has Botox!
It’s pretty much a guarantee everyone knows a few people getting Botox and they have no idea because you don’t notice a good injection, just like good hair color.
After your provider examines your facial expressions and area of concern, you will decide on the areas to do Botox. Then a very tiny needle is used to inject the Botox into the wrinkle-producing muscles. Botox is not a painful procedure. No anesthesia is required and the injections usually take only 10 to 15 minutes. You may see some redness and small bumps for about 10 minutes after the injection. Bruising is rare and you can apply make-up immediately. On average, it takes three to five days to start to see an effect and up to 3 weeks to see the maximum results from Botox. Results typically last about three months. In the ideal world, clients get Botox every 3-4 months but getting Botox even once or twice a year is a nice way to soften and prevent deep lines.
Clients request Botox initially to soften lines but often the reason for continuing treatment is because of the awesome lift they get around the eyes and mouth!
Double-Platinum provider Courtney Sumpter, physician assistant of Cosmetic Skin and Laser Center, and our other expert platinum providers at Cosmetic Skin and Laser Center have been offering Botox® for over 10 years and Dysport/Xeomin since their release. We have more experience and treat more patients with Botox® and Dysport® than any aesthetic practice in Northern Michigan. In experienced hands, Botox and it’s competitors provide a very natural lift and softer look. In the wrong hands, Botox can leave a very unnatural look including a smooth shiny forehead that doesn’t move or crow’s-feet that don’t move when you laugh or cry.
Well generally you wouldn’t color your hair before it was turning gray. Similarly, you don’t need injections before you have wrinkles to hide. Other than that, a patient can have Botox safely whenever they are bothered by their wrinkles and want long term prevention. There is no issue with long term use.
Although Botox was the first botulinum-a toxin approved by the FDA, competitor brands like Xeomin and Dysport offer the same results. Some believe Dysport sets in faster than Botox, but that has not been proven in a study. At Cosmetic Skin and Laser Center, we offer all three products and our providers will help in choosing the best product for you.
After the treatment, you will see a relaxing of the frown lines and wrinkles between your eyebrows (the “11” mark as some people refer to it) and on your forehead in anywhere from 3 to 4 days. Sometimes it can take up to a week for the full treatment to take effect (especially in men).
Talk with your provider prior to your procedure about your goals for using BOTOX/Dysport/Xeomin and feel free to ask any other questions regarding cosmetic procedures. Our providers and office coordinators are very willing to answer questions and want to hear from you if you have any.
We recommend that patients stop taking any aspirin or aspirin-like products about a week or so before the procedure (this includes Motrin and Aleve, but Tylenol is fine). This decreases chances of bruising. Some patients still have slight bruising at the injection site, which can be covered with a little makeup.
It takes skill and precise technique to get truly great results from BOTOX/Dysport/Xeomin, and any other wrinkle relaxers and fillers. Typically that means that you have to have an artistic eye, medical precision and LOTS of hands-on experience.
Our providers see poor results when patients go to "dabblers" in aesthetics for their BOTOX/Dysport/Xeomin. Product is commonly over-diluted to reduce costs in order to heavily discount the treatment; they aren’t as potent, they don't last long, and the technique is poor. The results in these cases often make patients look worse rather than better. There are many horror stories out there regarding botched injections. Always go to an expert that focuses on aesthetics. Spas and even some physicians don’t spend the time researching and practicing injections that our skilled providers do.
