While Botox treats dynamic wrinkles or lines of expression, fillers are used for deeper lines, static wrinkles that are visible whether you are making an expression or not and to enhance volume by filling deficits. At Cosmetic Skin & Laser Center, we’ve been injecting fillers for over 15 years and are proud to have been named top injector in the state for both Restylane® and Sculptra®. In addition we are a Platinum Plus provider of Juvederm®.
Initially, dermal fillers were just used to soften deep lip lines, plump thin lips, turn the corners of the mouth upward, and erase nasolabial folds. Over time, fillers have improved and our techniques have improved along with them. Now, we can use them to soften pretty much any line or wrinkle on the face and probably more importantly to replace volume loss and help with the “sinking” associated with aging.
As we age, we naturally lose fat pads and bone mass, which leads to under eye hollows and circles, flat cheeks and deeper nasolabial folds, more hollow temples and an undefined jawline
Filler injected well immediately helps you look less tired, more rested, and lifted. You may have heard of the “injectable face lift” or the “volumalift”—that’s what they’re referring to. Basically we can use different types of fillers give clients a ‘lunchtime lift’
- Aging hands
- Deep wrinkles around the lips & mouth
- Depression scars
- Facial volumization for aging faces
- Thinning lips
The most common type of fillers are made of hyaluronic acid—Restylane Silk®, Restylane® and Juvederm®. These softer fillers are used to correct under eye hollows and soften lines and wrinkles as well as correct the downturned mouth. Hyaluronic acid fillers are extremely safe. In 15 years and literally thousands of injections, we’ve never seen an infection or allergic reaction. They last anywhere from 6-12 months the first time you get them but many of them have been proven to stimulate your own collagen. That means that once you inject a wrinkle a couple of times, it will likely be diminished for 18 months.
The hyaluronic acid fillers also come in “thicker” products that are ideal for lifting, particularly in the cheeks and in the jowl area. The most common ones are Juvederm Voluma®, or Restylane Lyft. Another long-lasting lifting product is called Sculptra® and it’s a Cosmetic Skin & Laser Center favorite. Unlike the other fillers previously mentioned, it doesn’t give instant results. Instead, this product works overtime by stimulating your own collagen to produce a lift around the eyes and temples, in the cheeks, and all along the jawline. All of the products that replace volume and provide a lunchtime lift last 1-2 years.
What to expect…
After examining the areas that require fillers, we apply a topical numbing medication or ice. Fillers now have lidocaine mixed with them so with a good injector they really aren’t painful but ice takes the edge off. Treatments take 10 to 30 minutes depending on how many areas we are lifting and correcting. After treatment, some swelling for the first couple days is perfectly normal, especially in the lip and eye area. Any bruising generally covers with make-up. And if you stop advil, aspirin, fish oil and red wine a few days before your treatment, your risk of bruising is much lower. But, obviously we recommend not doing injections right before a big event.
We always find that our clients spend a lot of time planning their filler injections the first time and subsequent injections just become part of a normal day. The first time it’s nerve wracking…and then they realize it just isn’t that big of a deal.
Cosmetic Skin & Laser Center recommends that patients stop taking any aspirin or aspirin-like products about a week or so before the procedure to decrease the possibility of bruising. This includes Motrin and Aleve (Tylenol would be okay to continue). Some patients may experience slight bruising at the injection site, which can be covered with a little makeup.
