Perhaps you’ve suffered from acne scarring, spent too much time in the sun, or are just aging a little too quickly for your comfort…Total FX Fractional Laser is the gold standard of skin rejuvenation.
While featured on The Today Show and The Doctors, the University of Michigan says this revolutionary treatment will “change the way sun damaged, scarred, and wrinkled skin is treated for years to come.” In just 1-2 treatments, Total FX combines fractionated laser therapy with the gold standard CO2 laser to tighten skin, reduce deep wrinkles and acne scarring, and erase sun spots. Many patients elect to have sun-damaged skin on their neck and chest/décolleté area treated as well. Healing time is generally 5-7 days with some redness and minimal peeling. One week later you’ll be looking smoother, brighter, and you’ll see continued improvement for 3-6 months.
TotalFX is a revolutionary fractional treatment that combines all the benefits of DeepFX and ActiveFX in one treatment with minimal downtime. Fractional treatments treat only a fraction of the skin, leaving bridges of untouched skin that aid in the healing process and reduce healing times enabling you to return to normal activities quicker.
DeepFX utilizes a very narrow laser microbeam to remove columns of tissue deep into the layers of the skin. The body then heals the channel, which immediately stimulates new collagen growth to improve the appearance of wrinkles, scars and fine lines. ActiveFX uses a larger beam to treat the upper layer of skin to remove unwanted pigmentation, promote new skin regeneration, and improve fine lines and texture. In one treatment, TotalFX stimulates collagen growth for up six months and can improve the appearance of: scars, wrinkles, fine lines, tone, texture and pigmentation.
The TotalFX procedure is applied in two steps. First we will numb your skin with a topical anesthetic to aid in treatment comfort. The DeepFX laser is applied first, followed by the ActiveFX. Your total treatment time will last approximately 30 minutes, though total time will vary depending on the areas treated. During the procedure, you will feel a warm sensation as the laser is applied. Immediately following treatment, your skin will be warm, and will appear as though you were sunburned. We will provide you with a skin care regimen to follow for the days after your treatment and as your skin heals, you will begin to notice an improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, scars, pigmentation, tone and texture. You should expect to continue to see improvement for up to six months following the procedures.
Immediately after the procedure the skin will be very hot for about 2-4 hours. The skin may ooze for about 24 to 48 hours in any areas that have been treated with DeepFX. This is normal and expected.
Your provider will give you a post-treatment skin care package with thorough instructions for how to care for your skin after your procedure. Use only the products in your care package. You may notice mild to significant swelling. The more aggressive the treatment, the greater the swelling is likely to be. Most swelling improves by day 3. During this time you can wash your face with a gentle rinse that we will recommend and/or one tbsp plain white vinegar to 1-2 cups cold water. The water/vinegar combination is weak acetic acid and will act as an antibiotic and sooth the skin. Detailed post care instructions will be given to you after your procedure.
You may also notice some minor itching, but notify us if itching is more than mild and not controlled with Benadryl capsules (never use Benadryl cream). If you have a history of cold sores you should be taking an antiviral such as Valtrex or Acyclovir. Some patients do have breakouts after a few days of having the occlusive ointment on their skin. Somewhere between day 5 and 7 you should be able to start back with mineral make-up and stop the topical ointment. After a week or so the Active FX areas will look pretty normal but you will likely be pink in the areas of the Deep FX for at least two or three more weeks.
